What is Post-Weaning?

You must have read and heard about Postpartum depression, but post-weaning depression not commonly. Post-weaning depression is an emotional disorder that women face after weaning of their kid from breastfeeding. Weaning is the process of slowly putting a stop to breastfeeding, and gradually incorporating other foods into the diet of your child.

What causes it?

Breastfeeding is something that makes you and your baby bond closer, weaning is hard for both of you. Babies tend not to leave breastfeeding that easily and sometimes saying no your baby and seeing them in despair can make you feel terrible. Pregnancy and breastfeeding give your body and hormones a roller coaster ride. One of the main reasons for postpartum and post-weaning depression is due to these hormone fluctuations.
When you breastfeed your child, your body secretes oxytocin, which is a feel-good hormone. Prolactin is another hormone that is secreted when you breastfeed your child. A milk-making hormone, prolactin can trigger feelings of drowsiness and relaxation in the nursing mother. There is an abundance of these hormones and when you stop nursing it suddenly stops confusing your brain and body leading to depression.

Symptoms of Post-Weaning Depression:

  • Being sad post-weaning is normal but if you start to feel extreme sadness, anxiety and guilt it could be a sign.
  • An extensive amount of sleepless nights.
  • Unnaturally high level of fatigue.
  • Losing interest in your family, baby and everything that you loved.
  • Thoughts of self-harm.

How to stop it?


One of the first thing you have to do to be able to solve it, is accepting it. Most people aren’t aware of post-weaning depression and that is okay. You should be aware of your situation and it will help you move forward with dealing with it better.

Focus on the positive

It is very hard to think about good thing when all you feel is terrible things, but at the most trying to be positive can help. Changing your mind can make a lot of difference.

Consult a proffesional

Most people find it hard to seek for professional help when it comes to depression due to the taboo surrounding it. Consult a doctor or therapist so that you’ll be guided on the right path and get help for post-weaning depression treatment.


One of the biggest causes of post-weaning depression is hormone imbalance. Taking medications prescribed by the doctor can reverse the negative effects of hormonal fluctuations and improve your condition. Certain medications can help bring your body back to your normal self.

The worst thing you could do to yourself is during this situation is keeping it to yourself. Depression already makes a person feel lonely and asking the help and talking about all of it to your partner and loved once can help you feel better and distracted.

What you eat an do with your body can do wonders, eating a balanced diet and getting your body some exercise will not help you with your health but will have a healthy impact on your mind.

Post-weaning depression usually lasts for only about two weeks, but if it extends more than this, then you might want to consult a doctor. This should also be the case if you have had a history of depression. This is the time to give priority to your physical and mental health. Do not for a second hesistate to ask for help.
