Breastfeeding mothers are off caffeine and herbal trees are the only form of beverage that may seem like a suitable option. Just because they are herbal does not mean they are safe. Black and green tea have a high content of caffeine in them, herbal teas that may reduce milk supply include spearmint and peppermint, among others. Breastfeeding moms should also avoid borage tea or comfrey tea and any teas that contain ephedra, ginseng, black cohosh, aloe, licorice or basil.
Decrease of milk could also be due to being sick, it is not due to the infection viruses but the effects of being sick on the body such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Consulting the doctor during this time is a good idea because there is a chance your kid will get an infection.
Medications for colds which contain “pseudoephedrine,” a common ingredient in many over-the-counter allergy and cold medications can affect a mom’s milk supply. Cough drop can also cause a decrease in breastmilk. Avoid cough drop that contains menthol.
Even though having as less as one cup of coffee is allowed during more than that can directly milk supply. Women who are breastfeeding need more 500 calories than their normal diet. If you are dieting and you see a lack of breast milk it could be the reason. You need to give yourself enough nutrition before you give it to your baby.
Herbs and spices
Spices and herbs as normal as sage, parsley, oregano can cause a reduction in milk supply and should be avoided in your food. These herbs if had in smaller quantities may not have any adverse effects but it had in more quantities can be harmful.
Fish oil supplement
Fish oil supplements are high in Omega 3. Getting omega 3 is beneficial especially for women who are breastfeeding but some women have experienced that fish oil supplements affect their breastmilk supply. You can switch fish oil supplements to flaxseed oil supplements.
90 percent of the breast milk consists of water, and consuming water is very crucial during nursing, but sometimes women tend to overdo it and it results in reduced milk production it is because the body gets filled up with fluid meaning hunger is suppressed, and the mom ends up not eating enough food. Six to eight glasses is a healthy amount of water needed to produce healthy amount of breastmilk.
